Former OCC Student Charged with Drunk Driving, Trial Begins

A trial started on Monday, May 23, 2011, for a former OCC student charged with an Orange County drunk driving crash that claimed the life of another motorist. On February 14, 2010, Gustavo Adrian Vega, 23, was allegedly involved in a car crash around 2:28 a.m. on Sunflower Avenue and Flower Street in Costa Mesa. Authorities indicated that Vega ran a red light and struck a car, killing the passenger in the other vehicle.

The fatal Costa Mesa accident took the life of 20-year-old Cara Lee, as she was pronounced dead at the accident scene. The driver of her car sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The Orange County district attorney’s office claims that Vega fled the scene to a nearby house to hide. However, police did locate him and found him with a “useable” amount of cocaine on his body.

Vega was a student at OCC and could face up to 15 years to life in prison if he is convicted of this crime.

Lee was a recreational youth leader in Newport Beach and was pursuing a career in modeling. At age 17, she survived a battle with cancer, and then went on to attend college. Her death is sad news indeed.
